IF I HAD ADAM’S HAND

            for Adam, tailor, waiting in the refugee camp in Chad

it would be still as glass;

it would know how to hold onto the smile of a stranger

as if it were food;

it would know how to dig for water in the desert;

it would know how to sew and shape cloth;

it would know how to wash blood

from the body of his son;

it would know how to make at tent

in the terrible camps of Chad;

it would know how to wait;

it would shine.
