NOW YOU, DARFUR
Again the journey
faces bloom and wither
a thousand years:
Oh, Trail of Tears,
Middle Passage,
shackles of agony,
the bells of the procession of suffering
beyond the Urals.
Above us the morning star,
you moving through man’s darkest heart.
The red-backed shrike sings its cruel song.
Shoulder your burden, Sisyphus.
It is dawn.
