 NOW YOU, DARFUR

Again the journey

                                        faces bloom and wither

                                                                                  a thousand years:

Oh, Trail of Tears,

                                  Middle Passage,

                                                                shackles of agony,

the bells of the procession of  suffering

                                                            beyond the Urals.

Above us the morning star,

you moving through man’s darkest heart.

The red-backed shrike sings its cruel song.

                    Shoulder your burden, Sisyphus.

It is dawn.
