SUDAN

          for Diagne Chanel

The ones who survived cannot speak

of their anguish. It would be like touching

live coals. Those who walk on firm ground

would not understand what it is

to cross raging waters without a bridge.

Those scenes remain locked in their throats

forever scalding their dreams. And what of the thousands

slaughtered like prey,  their throats slit,

a wilderness of  young and old

tangled in mounds. They have not disappeared.

Their gaze follows us everywhere

asking, why did you turn away?
